
Matt Richards is an Australian director working across narrative fiction, documentaries and branded content. He holds a Master of Film & Television (Narrative) from the Victorian College of the Arts.
His short films — First Contact (2012), Rabbit (2014), and The Disappearance of Willie Bingham (2015) — have screened at over 100 international festivals, won more than 50 awards, and been viewed by millions online.
He was selected for the Australian Directors’ Guild ‘Ones To Watch’ program and pitched at the Melbourne International Film Festival’s 37ºSouth Market. He has also completed Film Victoria-supported director’s placements on Netflix’s Clickbait (2020) and ABC’s Tomorrow When the War Began (2016).
From 2014 to 2025, Matt produced short documentaries for the National Gallery of Victoria, profiling artists and designers such as Ai Weiwei, KAWS, Cai Guo-Qiang, Yayoi Kusama, Viktor & Rolf, and Jean Paul Gaultier.
Matt’s freelance clients include the Bendigo Art Gallery, Sophie Gannon Gallery, Tolarno Galleries, Open House Melbourne, The Local Project, and Maroondah City Council.
Directorial highlights include:
- Meart – The Semi Living Artist (2004), a science/art collaboration exhibited in Germany, Russia, Spain, Australia, and the US
- The Super 8 Diaries (2004–2007), a four-year music documentary on Australia’s underground punk scene
- First Contact (2012), a crowd-funded short drama that won eight awards and screened at 30 festivals in 16 countries
- Rabbit (2014), awarded Special Recognition for Direction at the San Francisco International Festival of Short Films and selected for MIFF’s Accelerator program
- The Disappearance of Willie Bingham (2015), a psychological horror short that won 20 awards, screened at 55 festivals in 19 countries, and was licensed for two anthology feature projects
